Duncan McSporran Dougal Haston (1940-1977)
Hard-drinking, soft-talking Scottish enigma
Laconic Edinburgh hard-man Haston rose from humble bakers son to
become one of the beautiful people of 1970s Leysin and a mountaineer of
world renown, before being buried in an avalanche while skiing. He arrived
at this end game via a series of spectacular climbing achievements including
his famous domestic ascent of The Bat on Ben Nevis with Robin Smith»,
but his breakthrough to world stardom was his winter ascent of the Eiger
Direct as part of the notorious Euro-wide televised Eiger gorefest of
1966 in which John Harlin died..
